What Is My Birthstone? A Simple Guide to Every Month & Their Meanings

What is a birthstone?

There’s something quite lovely about the idea that a small stone can hold a connection to the month you were born. A quiet symbol of identity, memory, and meaning that has been passed down through generations.

Whether you’re choosing a piece of jewellery for yourself or looking for a meaningful gift, birthstones are often one of those starting points that feel both personal and timeless.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through each birthstone, what it represents, and how you might choose one that feels right for you or someone you love.

Birthstones by month & what they mean

Each month features a different birthstone; some are lucky and have more than 1 to choose from. Below, you can find out what birthstone each month has, along with what the birthstone meanings are.

January – Garnet

Deep, rich, and grounding

Garnet is often associated with strength and protection. It’s a stone that feels steady and warm, like a reminder to stay rooted even in uncertain seasons.

A beautiful choice if you want something that feels grounding and timeless.

February – Amethyst

Calm, clarity, and quiet strength

Amethyst is known for its soft purple tones and calming energy. It’s often linked with clarity of mind and emotional balance.

A lovely stone for those who value peace, reflection, or a gentler pace of life.

March – Aquamarine

Softness and flow.

Aquamarine carries the feel of water: calm, fluid, and soothing. It’s often associated with emotional clarity and communication.

A beautiful reminder to move gently through life.

April – Diamond

Strength and enduring love.

Diamonds are often seen as symbols of resilience and everlasting connection. While traditionally associated with engagement jewellery, they also represent clarity and strength.

A timeless choice for marking something meaningful.

May – Emerald

Growth and renewal.

Emerald is a rich green stone often linked to growth, renewal, and harmony. It feels alive and full of depth.

A meaningful choice for new beginnings or personal transformation.

June – Pearl, Moonstone or Alexandrite

Soft elegance, intuition, and quiet transformation

June is unique in that it has three widely recognised birthstones, each with its own distinct feel and meaning. Rather than one fixed choice, it offers a range of symbolism that people often connect with in different ways.

Pearl is the most traditional of the three. Known for its soft, classic beauty, it represents purity, simplicity, and timeless elegance. It feels calm and enduring, often chosen for its understated grace.

Moonstone carries a more ethereal quality. With its gentle, shifting glow, it is often associated with intuition, emotional balance, and new beginnings. It feels soft and reflective, like a reminder to trust your inner voice.

Alexandrite is the rarest of the three and perhaps the most unexpected. Known for its subtle colour change in different light, it is often linked to transformation, adaptability, and the beauty of change itself.

Together, these three stones offer very different energies, from classic and timeless to intuitive and reflective, to rare and transformative. Many people find themselves drawn to the one that simply feels right rather than the one that's deemed the most popular.

July – Ruby

Passion and protection.

Ruby is bold and full of warmth. It’s often associated with love, courage, and vitality.

A striking choice for something deeply meaningful or emotionally significant.

August – Peridot

Lightness and positivity

Peridot has a soft green glow that feels uplifting and fresh. It’s often linked with positivity and renewal.

A lovely stone for bringing a sense of brightness into everyday life.

September – Sapphire

Wisdom and truth

Sapphire is known for its deep blue tones and association with honesty, loyalty, and wisdom.

A classic choice that feels both strong and elegant.

October – Opal or Tourmaline

Individuality and expression

October has two beautiful options. Opal is known for its shifting colours and unique patterns, while tourmaline comes in a range of tones and colours, each carrying its own feel.

Both reflect individuality and personal expression.

November – Topaz or Citrine

Warmth and abundance

These stones carry warm golden tones and are often associated with joy, abundance, and positivity.

A comforting choice that feels uplifting and bright.

December – Turquoise, Tanzanite or Zircon

Calm, reflection, and depth

December’s stones are often cool-toned and calming. They’re associated with reflection, stillness, and depth of feeling.

A beautiful way to mark the end of a year or a meaningful transition.

choosing a birthstone

While birthstones are traditionally linked to the month you were born, many people choose them in a much more personal way.

Some choose a stone that represents themselves, even if it’s not their birth month, simply because they feel drawn to its colour or meaning. Others choose birthstones for the people they love. A partner, a child, a parent, creating a piece of jewellery that quietly holds family close.

They can also become a beautiful way to mark life’s most meaningful moments. A new birth in the family, a milestone birthday, or a piece created in memory of someone who is no longer here.

In this way, birthstone jewellery becomes more than a date or a tradition. It becomes a way of carrying people with you, in a form that feels subtle, personal, and lasting.

There is no right or wrong choice. Only what feels meaningful to you.

HOW I USE BIRTHSTONES IN MY JEWELLERY

In my work at Streets Craft Creations, I often incorporate gemstones in a way that feels personal to the wearer. Birthstones can be a subtle nod to someone’s story, a moment in time, or a person you want to keep close.

They can sit quietly in a simple silver piece, or become part of something more bespoke and meaningful.

If you’re drawn to a particular stone, you’re welcome to explore my pieces or get in touch if you’d like something created especially for you.
